A couple of Intellectual Property blogs have chimed in on the recent action by Disney to shut down a student production of "Sister Act" in Galway, Ireland. Cearta.ie posts about how some of Ireland’s fair use laws differ from those in the United states. Apparently there is no ‘Fair Use’ for parody in Ireland. So that wouldn’t work as an excuse. IPKat hopes that since this is a student production there might be some learning opportunities here, but thinks Disney could have handled it better, none the less.
I still wonder if this would have even been noticed if the group had just changed the name of the play since they’d already changed the songs and script as noted in a post on the group’s forums.
