New Downtown Disney at WDW

Kevin Yee scoops a big announcement today that will literally change the direction of the Walt Disney World Resort. Just last year Disney completed Western Way, which intersects with the 429 toll road and, by extension, a region of quick residential growth to the northwest side of the Disney property. Yee discovered Disney’s plans to build a shopping center there along with another DVC resort and an economy level resort.

The Western Beltway Development (to be built in five phases, per
market conditions) will be just another piece of the
Destination Disney program. Those people who want to visit Disney parks
but save money by staying off-site and eating off-property will now have
another option. This time, it may be equally as cost-effective, but it
will be Disney itself reaping the financial rewards, not their
competitors.

It does seem like an natural thing for Disney to do. But I wonder if they won’t finish building out Pop Century before starting on this project. (Read)

  1. According to a very reliable source on RADP:

    “Pop Century Back on Track

Didn’t see it posted yet so I thought I’d chime in about Pop Century. The remaining build-out has been approved and some infrastructure work started. The construction will speed up shortly, when the final decision is made about how many family suites there will be. ”
