Cypress Gardens enters bankruptcy protection over 2004 hurricane season

  • by

The story of Cypress Gardens return to greatness has been delayed by the damage inflicted by three hurricanes and an insurance policy that wouldn’t pay to cover the repairs. Cypress Gardens endured approximately $30 million in damage during the 2004 hurricane season. The company filed $24.8 million worth of insurance claims following the hurricanes, but only received about $6.9 from the park’s insurer. A suit was filed over the claim in September 2005. It’s not clear if filing bankruptcy might help the park in the suit. The Lakeland Ledger has more details from court documents on the suit and the Chapter 11 filing.
