Grant McCracken, marketing blogger, looks at two seemingly contridictory decisions by Disney Management how one might save Hollywood and how one risks ruining a studio. The first decision was to let Johnny Depp be Johnny Depp and create the Captain Jack Sparrow character exactly as he wanted to (well, except for the falling off nose part). The second decision was to promote a ‘marketing guy’ to studio President at exactly the time when marketing (see first decision) is failing the studios. Being a marketing guy himself, McCracken has some expertise on the matter.
Someone looking to make a name for themselves in Hollywood could do worse than reading all of McCracken’s posts on why Chunky is good for Hollywood. It’s a Longtail thing.
