Migrating The Lion King to a new Theatre in NY

  • by

As mentioned Disney is in the process of opening a new Musical in NYC, Mary Poppins. They’re placing MAPO in the New Amsterdam with its 1800 seats and personal up close feel for the audience. Astute observers may remember that another Disney musical has occupied this space with another musical. The Lion King opened in 1998 after a renovation of the once run down property and has played 3571 performances since then.

Now the show’s logo, a lion mask against a large, lighted yellow
backdrop, looks out from the wide Times Square window of the Minskoff,
an antiseptic 1970s-modern theater that has been transformed into a
more inviting space with the arrival last week of the Disney megahit.

I’m glad I got a chance to see TLK at the New Amsterdam and hope to see Mary Poppins there too. (Link)
