ESPN Mobile in the red zone

DeadSpin quotes Sports Business Daily’s look at Mobile ESPN. Apparently the new mobile phone service is already $25 million in the red.

Mobile ESPN has lost $25M so far after launching a $30M ad campaign
that included an ad on ABC’s Super Bowl broadcast, according to Alice
Cuneo of AD AGE. Disney President & CEO Robert Iger acknowledged,
“Initial results were a little bit lower than we had hoped. But we have
changed our pricing approach, we have strengthened and redirected our
marketing, we’re expanding our presence at retail.” Ovum wireless
analyst Roger Entner said that the $25M loss “would be considered
‘normal’ by carrier standards.” Entner added, “I would rather expect
that to increase with more customers coming on board, but to swing into
profitability [within 2-3 years]”

I say give it time and I disagree about those commercials. I really like the ones where the user is in a sports world. (link)

  1. Those are cool commercials. I also like the guy that keeps trying to get into the ESPN compound.
I haven’t bought into the phone yet, perhaps they should give more details about the minutes and what exactly it would entail to use it.
Also, I wonder if it will be incorporated into the new Disney Mobile phone service. That might make owning one a little more attractive to this dad.

  2. Disneyland is the best theme park. if you havenot been there then go! Splash mountain is one of the best rides. star tours is better.
