More details on the strike vote from the Orlando Sentinel:
Some union leaders said the prospect of a strike was not realistic. Under Florida law, not everyone represented by a union has to be a member. Of the roughly 22,000 members of the trades council, slightly more than half are members.
This would mean that a number somewhere less than 11,000 would be on strike. Still very bad for PR and very bad for the bus transportation system.
This is beginning to remind me of the power the union weilds in Las Vegas. Nevada is also an at-will work state, so not everyone joins the union. However, the desire by union members to be paid a living wage, have decent and affordable healthcare, has given them such strength that the casino resorts had to bring a better offer to the table or risk losing short term and long term business.
