Disney’s Animal Kingdom Welcomes Baby Elephant

Exciting news from Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando, FL. (thanks LaughingPlace.com!)

“In the same way that people prepare their homes for a newborn baby, the staff at Disney’s Animal Kingdom took steps to “baby proof” the elephant habitat to ensure that there were no hazards for a young elephant calf.”

Having seen the Animal Kingdom elephant care facilities for myself (you can too on the backstage tour!) I must admit I was impressed. Disney uses a barrier-contact method with the animals. This means that the cast member is never in the same area as the animal. All care is administered from behind thick steel poles (you can see them in the photo that accompanies the story). This protects the animal and the keeper.
