Disney World to Enter Mediation with Union

Disney World and its largest union will enter mediation with a federal arbiter after an employee vote rejected the company’s proposal. Talks will start Dec 2nd and no strike is eminent.

This article in the Orlando Sentinel points out how often contract negotiations at Disney end up in front of a federal mediator. Which tells you that both sides think they’re bargaining from strong positions. I have to believe that if the economy continues to improve the union’s position will get stronger the longer the talks drag on. At least, Disney might see that its pie is larger and be more open to sharing it.

  1. From where I sit in California, the economy is getting weaker, not stronger, so that puts the ball in Disney’s court.
