We currently have an iPod touch at home and I am impressed with its ability to teach as well as entertain. I can’t wait to upgrade to an iPad, expand the visual real estate, and explore its potential as well. Thankfully, Disney has been aware of Apple’s iOS family of devices ability to entertain and educate at the same time. They continue to grow their portfolio of terrific apps for the whole family all the time.
The latest app takes you on a journey to the snowy Russian hilltops and across the sunny African plains just like you’re experiencing the classic Walt Disney song and ride “It’s a Small World”. The talented folk at Disney Publishing have translated the popular attraction into a colorful, animated app, for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch!
Drawing its inspiration from the original concepts of Imagineers Mary Blair and Alice Davis, The animated app features whimsical interactive features, beautiful artwork from illustrator Joey Chou, and unforgettable music from the original Sherman Brothers’ song lyrics. Download your own copy of the “It’s a Small World” app for $3.99 from the App Store on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch:

I get excited everytime I see Disney Publishing releases a new app, and then disappointed at the diminishing quality.
I have a daughter so my first book was Princess and the Frog which was fantastic and made her (and me) a much bigger fan of the franchise. And then Toy Story 1, 2 and 3 were also well done so I thought they were on a role. But then came Cars and Winnie the Pooh which was very very weak and aimed at pre-schoolers, and then Cars 2 which was just a bunch of still shots from the movie. And when I thought that was as low as they can go, they next came up with this “A Royal Christmas” which was 3 original christmas tales featuring pricesses but were so boring that my princess-crazy daughter couldn’t even pay attention.
Yes, Small World is an improvement (despite the concept being murky and not at all what you’d expect) but the big question is this. Where the heck is Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Rapunzel?!?! Princess and the Frog was done so well that it seems crazy that they didn’t cash in and do all the princess stories but instead they’re churning out an overpriced mixed bag of mediocre or garbage.
I haven’t really been buying these apps. So it’s nice to read some feedback.
This app is drawn directly from a very nice print book which we bought on our last trip in October. Try to find the print book before introducing your kid to the app.
