I suggest that Disney’s The Goofy Movie is one of the overlooked gems of Walt Disney’s animation pantheon. It was Kevin Lima’s coming out party as an Animation Director and largely a production of the short-lived French branch of Walt Disney Animation aka DisneyToon Studios.
I’m not the film’s only fan. Check out Ted Soward’s fan-made reconstruction of the first few minutes from the film. They’ve taken the animated sequence and remade it using real life people, scenes, and backgrounds. Production of this video required $100, a borrowed camera, over 90 friends and family, Final Cut Pro, six months of free time, and a lot of creating Imagineering.
Check it out, I think you’ll be impressed.
Interesting that you posted this – I watched the movie on the Disney Channel with my family last night for the first time in years. It really is an underrated and overlooked movie.
I haven’t really ever watched this movie, I may have to reconsider it. The video that you posted is amazing.
"After Today" from Disney's The Goofy Movie recreated shot for shot in real life – http://bit.ly/9Yjpgh – you must see this!
It’s great to see other pople still appreciate and recognise this lost gem. Compared to the other two Disney animated films of 1995 (*cough* POCAHONTAS *cough*) A Goofy Movie had great characters, a whole lot of heart and in all managed to achieve a lot more with a whole lot less. Tevin Campell’s songs – I2I and Stand Out were worth the price of admission alone.
It’s a shame it’s been forgotten – The movie has a great 1990s period feel about it without been specifically dated. One would think the 15th Anniversary in April would be a great time to put out a new DVD or BD with the correct Aspect Ratio in R1/encoding for 16:9 in R2/3… It’s not like it wouldn’t sell… It’s got freaking Goofy on the cover!
One issue I have is people calling it a DisneyToon picture. It was a Walt Disney FEATURE Animation France picture – The same studio who contributed to Runaway Brain, HoND, Hercules, Tarzan, Fantasia 2000, Atlantis… NOT DisneyToon material.
That may be true. But unfortunately it’s not providence enough to be considered one of the 50 Feature Animated Films from Walt Disney Animation Studios (Tangled is #50).

Amazing vid, man. It’s that kinda stuff that I wanna do!
I agree it’s not a ‘cannon’ film (already a loose term) but I still draw great exception to it being lumped into the same category of Return of Jafar or Ducktales as the production values are just not the same.
It also wasn’t lead by Walt Disney Television Animation but instead Feature Animation and was developed to get the French studio up to Burbank’s standards so they could work on bigger and better features. Burbank contributed animation to the final film… as well as all the other global Disney studios after Paris realised they bit off more then they could chew!
Forgot to change the name on the post.
Awesome video. One of my favorite videos. The best part about it is only $100 spent. Great stuff.
Thanks so much for posting this video. We really do feel many of the old characters and movies are starting to be forgotten. We made this to preserve and bring back this into people’s minds. We’d love for Disney to use it as a promotion for A Goofy Movie or something.
Thanks again.
Very cool and professionally done. The attention to detail was great. Worthy of inclusion with a new release of the “Goofy Movie”.
