The stimulus package passed by Congress contains some money for ‘shovel ready’ high speed rail projects. As it turns out Florida completed most of the studies required for High Speed Rail in 2004 and would be one of 10 states with ready to go projects should that money be approved.
Why am I posting about this on The Disney Blog? Because the Orlando segment, as discussed by Orange County Commissioner Bill Segal on this Fox Orlando story tonight, would run from the Orlando Airport (MCO) right past Disney’s doorstep.
Bingo. Add in some lightrail to connect the other attractions in theĀ area to the High Speed Rail station and we have one of the key ingredients required to bring some life back into Central Florida. Easing the ability of out of town (or country) guests to spend extra days in Orlando without having to rent a car is a big win for the local economy.

Florida passed an HSR referendum before. Then they repealed it. I hope that doesn’t happen here in California. We passed our high speed rail measure last election.

It’s going to piss off Disney. Their Magical Express Whatever Service was designed to get you from the airport to Disney World, without you renting a car. The reason they run it as a loss is so you spend more time on property and less time at its competitors.
They don’t want rail, neither the light nor high speed variety. They want their buses and they want you on them.
