UNITE HERE local 11 has started a blog to keep track of the many ways they see the Walt Disney Company as being unfaithful to its workers and values.
Approximately 2,300 employees of the Disneyland Hotels, including bellmen, dishwashers, room attendants, and cooks, have been working without a contract since February 2008. Disney is unfaithful to the community and the workers because they do not uphold their espoused family values. Many hotel workers who have given years to the company will be faced with increased difficulty in obtaining healthcare for their families due to the proposals of Disney. The company is proposing to increase both cost and eligibility requirements to these low wage workers for benefits like health-care, vacation and seniority. This will cause suffering to many workers and their children.
For instance they point out that:
In 2007, [Disney CEO] Iger made $27,700,000 – or approximately $75,890 a day! In contrast, a Disney family of four with two full-time working parents, a dishwasher and a housekeeper, together make $41,434 per year, or $3,453 per month. The math is obvious: it would take almost two years for this working family to make what Iger makes in just one day. Such families are barely able to pay for the high cost of housing, food, child care, transportation and healthcare in Orange County.
Of course, $27 million pails in comparison with Eisner’s $205 million in the height of his reign. I’m not sure if that would please the folks at UNITE HERE.
That’s a prime example of corporate America. And to think that I have stock in Disney. It’s sad that people have to try and survive off so little money…. but look at people in Africa.. they wished they had the opportunity to work for Disney even on the low salary. The ceo is a lucky guy. Hopefully he is a nice kind hearted person and generous with his money.
Oh I am sure he gives some to charity and supports a few needy projects close to his heart he most likely sends his kids to the best schools so they can learn, just like dear ol Dad.If I were running a great name like Disney I would make sure my employees were making a very good wage if I were making what he is making, there is no way a man is worth that kind of money a day, week, month period.
Looks like their site has been taken down.
