Okay, okay… I know I was late. I know I should have seen the film a long time ago, but I didn’t. My wife and I finally went to see the "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest" late Friday night, and despite not having had enough sleep and despite being up late past my bedtime, I stayed awake through the whole long film without fighting the eyelids.
I can see why some reviews have been hard on the film. As for me, I enjoyed it. I wasn’t going there to have a religious experience or to have my life changed. I went to see the film to have fun, and I did. One thing I really like about both "Curse of the Black Pearl" and "Dead Man’s Chest" is that both films show us things we haven’t seen before. That’s not easy to do in today’s world of high-tech animated special effects.
I think people tend to get jaded with sfx these days. We all know how they’re done, at least on the basic level. But when you get down to it, effects like those in Dead Man’s Chest take a lot of hard work by a lot of people. So, it you were looking for "Citizen Kane" or "Casablanca", you should have gone to your local DVD supplier. This film’s about having fun, seeing some action, and laughing a little. Where it counts – which is the box office – it is a blockbuster; critics or not.
