Tron-o-Rail Debuts at EPCOT

Orlando Attractions Magazine has scored some of the first video of the newly wrapped Monorail advertising for Disney’s upcoming film TRON Legacy. I don’t know about you, but I’m loving it:

Now, some people have been complaining about this being a blatant ad that takes people out of the park and reminds them of the real world while they’re supposed to be relaxing on their vacation. Those people might also want to get rid of all similar promotions, including the first movie promotion placed in a Disney theme park.

It’s still around. In fact, Walt Disney built his whole first theme park around it. I’m talking about Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland, of course. Walt saw the value of a product tie-in and built this giant advertisement for a movie that was still five years away from opening in theaters. At least TRON Legacy opens in December.

Disney theme parks are the perfect place to market Disney movies, particularly when there is a similarity in theme. The world of TRON fits perfectly with FutureWorld at EPCOT Center. Just like Princess Tiana fit perfectly on the river boat at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom.

  1. I love it too, very cool. It’s not like it’s an ad for Bud Light or the Census or something. Plus in this case, the futuristic theme of the movie fits the ad perfectly. Very cool.

  2. Creating a musical, interactive show to promote a movie is a completely different from slapping some Tron stickers on the Monorail. I’d love it if they’d add a Tron-themed attraction or show to Futureworld, trust me. However, the Monorail is as much a symbol of Disney World as Cinderella’s Castle or Spaceship Earth, and I hate the thought of lowering it to the status of moving billboard (and for the record, I haven’t liked any of the tacky decals they’ve been gluing all over the Monorail lately).

    Yes am purist.
