So, I’m hanging with Bruce Smith at the Magic Kingdom the other day (how many times will I ever be able to open a story with that line?) and I totally wanted to ask him about a “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” sequel, since he worked on the original. But when time came for the official interview, I forgot. Figures.

Turns out that’s okay because Honor Hunter sent his minions out to collect the latest details on the Roger Rabbit sequel and found a scoop. Roger Zemeckis mentioned that a new screenplay was in progress during this interview with MTV.

There are still a lot of hoops to climb through for the sequel. For instance, Bob Hoskins who played Eddie Valiant has essentially declared himself unfit for that style of acting. But every step forward is a good one.

We shot some 20-hour days, we were wearing the suits, which are not easy to wear. I was doing a lot of my own stunts and training a lot of the time. Really pushing myself physically as well as mentally. It was an epic undertaking. It was a HUGE film to shoot in those few days. I was so proud to be a part of it. The morning that we wrapped it was an unbelievable feeling. We all just lost it. It was sunrise and we couldn’t believe we were actually done.

So when do we start camping in line?

As Beatlemania sweeps the world all over again this week with the issuing of the band’s remastered catalogue on CD and The Beatles: Rock Band video game, The Walt Disney Studios, The Beatles‘ company Apple Corps Ltd., and Robert Zemeckis’ Disney-owned studio ImageMovers Digital officially announced today at the D23 Expo that a deal has been struck to “develop a new 3D performance capture adaptation of the 1968 hit animated film Yellow Submarine to be written and directed by Robert Zemeckis”.

Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook made the announcement, confirming Hollywood trade publication Variety’s report from last month which said a deal was in the works —news that rankled many but made me very happy.

The film will incorporate 16 of the Beatles’ original recordings, including classic songs like ”All You Need Is Love”, “Eleanor Rigby”, and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”. No target release year or date was mentioned, but there seems no reason to doubt Variety’s claim of Summer 2012, considering the factual accuracy of the rest of their story.

Again, this is simply a dream collaboration: “one of the most exciting and anticipated project’s coming from Disney” in the next few years, as I put it in my earlier post. To have Disney and Robert Zemeckis put breathtaking 3-D images to the lyrics and melodies of the Beatles’ songs should prove to be quite an experience for moviegoers.

Interestingly, in the mini documentary included with remastered version of the Yellow Submarine album released on Wednesday, Paul McCartney conspicuously mentions Disney at least twice as an influence on the Beatles’ decision to create the original Yellow Submarine animated film (poster pictured), released in 1968.

The complete press release, with extended quotes from Cook, Zemeckis, and Apple Corps CEO Jeff Jones, after the jump.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE WALT DISNEY STUDIOS, THE BEATLES’ APPLE CORPS LTD. , AND OSCAR®-WINNING FILMMAKER ROBERT ZEMECKIS DIVE INTO NEW MAGICAL 3D ADAPTATION OF THE 1968 CLASSIC YELLOW SUBMARINE

Anaheim, California — September 11, 2009 – The Walt Disney Studios has made a deal with Apple Corps Ltd. to develop a new 3D performance capture adaptation of the 1968 hit animated film “Yellow Submarine” to be written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, it was announced today at the D23 Expo by Dick Cook, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. The film will be created by ImageMovers Digital, Disney’s state-of-the-art performance capture animation studio operated in conjunction with Zemeckis and his partners, Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey, who will serve as producers on the project.

For this fantastic new voyage to Pepperland, Zemeckis will incorporate the 16 Beatles songs and recordings from the original motion picture licensed from Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC and EMI-Capitol Records, respectively. The songs include “All Together Now,” “All You Need Is Love,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “With A Little Help From My Friends” while combining his unique vision and style to bring this dazzling tale to life.

In making the announcement, Cook said, “This is truly an inspired collaboration, and a wonderful opportunity to revisit one of the most imaginative and memorable musical fantasies of all time. To be working with the amazing folks at Apple Corps, and to have Bob helming the sub is truly as good as it gets. With all those incredible Beatles songs and imagery, the spectacular vision of Bob and his pioneering team at ImageMovers Digital, and a classic adventure full of wit and action, we’re sure that moviegoers are going to have a great time on this latest trip to Pepperland.”

Zemeckis said, “’Yellow Submarine’ is one of the greatest fantasy films of all time, and making this new 3D performance capture movie is a dream come true for me. With the latest advances in technology, we will be able to take moviegoers on a voyage unlike any other, and bring new excitement and dimension to Pepperland and the various sea worlds they encounter. I’m thrilled to be working with the good folks at Apple Corps and our partners at Disney on this epic retelling of one of my all time favorite films.”

Jeff Jones, CEO, Apple Corps Ltd., said, “With The Beatles and Walt Disney Studios, we have a partnership between two of the best loved creative entities in the world. We’re very excited about the magical fantasy that will result from this collaboration. The marriage of the music of The Beatles with the talent and technical wizardry of Robert Zemeckis and ImageMovers Digital should produce something very special. We look forward to working with Bob and his team on realising his new vision for ‘Yellow Submarine’”.

The original motion picture (released in the U.S. on November 13, 1968) based on the music of The Beatles was directed by George Dunning and featured the inspired art direction and design of Heinz Edelmann. The movie is set in Pepperland, an undersea paradise inhabited by music lovers who live in peace and harmony and are protected by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. That is…until they are threatened by the music hating Blue Meanies. It’s up to John, Paul, George and Ringo to set off on a magical adventure in their yellow submarine and bring music and harmony back to Pepperland.

It was a big day at the D23 Expo in Anaheim for fans of Disney movies. Key talent and filmmakers from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ upcoming slate of movies were on hand at the D23 Expo, made some surprise appearances. Alas photography and video devices of any kind were banned from the presentation, so we have to really on Disney PR to provide the shots.

Mickey Mouse, Anika Noni Rose, and CEO Bob Iger get chummy.

The biggest news was that Johnny Depp will be back in a fourth edition of the popular movie based on the Disneyland pirates attraction. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will come out in 2011. Depp appeared on stage in full Captain Jack Sparrow regalia acting with the drunken swagger we’ve come to expect from the Pirate rogue. (Note: sadly there is no PR photo of this yet. One is promised. When I find it I’ll put it up.)

Depp is also appearing in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Lone Ranger”. None of this was really news, the only question was when. Tim Burton also announced he is making a feature length version of his “Frankenweenie” cult short film.

Bruckheimer, Cyrus, and Cage post for the camera.

Nicolas Cage, star of upcoming film “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (July 2010) wants to do another “National Treasure” film. Someone is probably making that happen as we speak. (updated)

That’s a handsome looking family.

The Travolta family, John, wife Kelly Preston, and their daughter Ella Bleu previewed some scenes from “Old Dogs,” which also stars Robin Williams. It’s 9-year-old Ella Bleu’s debut. It will hit theaters November 25th 2009.

Miley Cyrus, star of upcoming film “The Last Song” sang her hit song “The Climb.”

Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of upcoming films “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” (May 2010) and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (July 2010) was there to preview those two films to the audience.

It’s not a show without an appearance by the Muppets. Hey is that Mark Twain for sale?.

Also Kermit the Frog, and the game from the Muppets put in an appearance. Disney has plans for these Muppets, but I don’t think it’s a new finale for Fantasmic!

This wasn’t even all the news. Tomorrow Pixar studios and John Lasseter gets their chance.

Race to Witch Mountain opens today and sadly, it’s getting mixed reviews. Good enough to kill a few hours before summer gets started, but otherwise boring and pointless.

A.O. Scott from the NY Times, whose reviews I seem to find a lot to agree with, says the movie “is modest and diverting, rough and bland, with some good (if not quite Bette Davis caliber) actors and so-so special effects.”

Eric Snider at Cinematical is not so kind. “Are you getting the impression that the film consists entirely of random, pointless details?” I am now. “The whole thing’s loud and flat, like a radio tuned to static and turned up all the way.”

RottenTomatoes.com has it pegged at 45 out of 100. So your mileage may vary.

If you do see Dwayne Johnson and Race To Witch Mountain please do return and leave your thoughts below.

I’d like everyone to welcome Mike to The Disney Blog as guest author. Mike comes to us from The Pixar Blog, where this review may seem a little out of place.

Walt Disney’s second animated feature production Pinocchio arrives tomorrow on 2-Disc Platinum Edition DVD and Blu-ray Disc, in celebration of its 70th anniversary. I got an advance copy of the Blu-ray this morning and, well, I’m thrilled. Pinocchio is one of Disney’s most enduring classics, and a personal favorite for me, so it’s good to see it receive such a high-quality home video release. (The only thing better would have been a special theatrical re-release.)

Everything about the Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition, from the (very shiny!) packaging to the included extras, demonstrates the work Disney put into preparing it. As for the film itself —hate to use a cliché— it’s never looked and sounded better.

Overview (Region 1)

DVD

The DVD version presents the newly digitally restored film in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1 (that’s full screen) with a new sound mix in Dolby Digital 5.1, specially enhanced for home theaters. Included are 5.1 French and Spanish language tracks.

Disc One includes trivia and sing-along bonus features, as well as audio commentary by film historian Leonard Maltin and others. Contained on Disc Two is a documentary entitled No Strings Attached: The Making of Pinocchio that follows the production of the movie, two never-before-seen deleted scenes and an alternate ending from the Disney Archives, a featurette about Walt Disney’s ‘sweatbox’ artistic review process, live action reference footage, art galleries, a collection of deleted songs, and games. (Whoa! Have to take a breath!)

Blu-ray Disc

The Blu-ray version offers everything found on the DVD (like all the bonus features mentioned above) plus more, spread across two discs. Pinocchio is presented in stunning 1080p high definition video (1.33:1 aspect ratio) with up to 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (48 kHz/24-bit). French and Spanish tracks are in 7.1 DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and 5.1 Dolby Digital respectively. This marks the first time that Pinocchio can be enjoyed in hi-def.

Bonus features are in 1080p, 1080i, and 480i resolutions, with audio in Dolby Digital 2.0. Included are several Blu-ray exclusive functions such as Cine-Explore and the Disney BD-Live Network.

Additionally, bundled in the Blu-ray package is a supplementary third disc, a DVD of the movie, for playing in regular, old-fashioned DVD players. Specs are the same as for the 2-disc DVD version. The inclusion of a standard DVD with Blu-ray titles is set to become the norm for Disney, as it encourages consumers to buy the Blu-ray version even if they don’t currently own a Blu-ray player. Quite smart if you plan on upgrading, but beware that there’s no extras on the DVD —they’re all on the two Blu-ray discs.

(Note: Blu-ray.com, among others, has an excellent review geared toward enthusiasts of the format.)

And now, for your enjoyment, three short previews of some of the bonus material after the cut:

The New York Times profiles former wrestler “The Rock” turned movie star Dwayne Johnson. With “Race to Witch Mountain” hitting theaters this Friday, the box office results may be the final test for Johnson’s ability to draw large enough audiences to catapult him into the A-List.

Mr. Johnson said he hopes that “Race to Witch Mountain,” a project Mr. Aviv said was written entirely around him, will bridge his family and action fan bases. His character is a world-weary Las Vegas cab driver who reluctantly agrees to help the two towheads find their spaceship, which has been hidden in a top-secret mountain facility by the United States government.

The role called for hard-core car chases, a close brush with a freight train and lots of hand-to-hand combat with machine-gun-packing bad guys — with Mr. Johnson doing many of his own stunts because it is so difficult to find stuntmen of his size.

What do you think? Will you going to see RtWM because of Dwayne Johnson? Because it’s a relaunch of a series from your childhood? Other reasons? Or is this one you plan to skip?

It sounds like they are still trying to decide on the title for the movie. It’s not likely to be TR2N or Tron 2.0. Whatever they call it, at least in online circles TR2N is shaping up to be Disney’s most anticipated future release and it doesn’t even open until 2011.

020909 Update: The deal is now official.

Nikki Finke reported it first, then the NY Times confirmed the news… Dreamworks SKG (the film and tv, but not the animation, division) has ended negotiations to partner with Universal Studios and instead is heading just a bit further down the concrete banks of the LA river to Walt Disney Studios.

Plenty of rumors are swirling. One claims Disney would sell its Miramax division (I see that as unlikely, since it is Disney’s best bet at Oscar Gold each year). Another is that David Geffen has always wanted to move to Disney, but that Spielberg felt more comfortable at Universal since that’s where his Amblin Production offices are. That seems more likely.

If anything this bodes well for the rumored sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Disney would have to team with Amblin again to make the sequel. Having Steven Spielberg on your team should make that a snap.

If this comes to fruition, one has to wonder how it will affect Bob Iger’s decision to keep the number of films it releases each year down to about a dozen. Would that number go up or would Dreamworks canablize other projects within the Disney studio?

TRON 2.0, aka TR2N, the long anticipated sequel to the groundbreaking original Disney film has been picking up cast members and apparently impressing them. Olivia Wilde was quoted on the Golden Globes red carpet making some fairly lofty statements.

The new terrorism thriller “Body of Lies” failed to take the top spot at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday….

The $70 million Warner Bros. film, starring Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio as American spies, had to settle for the No. 3 slot with $13.1 million, behind reigning champ “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and the new low-budget horror “Quarantine.”

Way to go Disney. Hopefully this means the public is in the mood for Canine stories as Disney’s BOLT opens next month on November 21st.

“Beverly Hills Chihuahua” barks onto the scene tomorrow to declare an early lead on the Best Dog In A Motion Picture Academy Award. No, it’s not the next Eddie Murphy return vehicle, instead it purports to be a cute story of love, loss and rescue between two diminutive and overly pampered dogs who happen to believe they’re descendant from gods. Well, not exactly, but you get the picture.

The film features the voices of George Lopez, Drew Barrymore, Andy Garcia, Plácido Domingo, Edward James Olmos, Paul Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, Luis Guzman, Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo, and actors Piper Perabo, Manolo Cardona, Eugenio Derbez and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Critics have not been kind to “Beverly Hills Chihuahua.” Rotten Tomatoes has it pegged at 67%. But some have reported that a warm hearted story and a lack of the typical dog jokes make BHC better than the average dog comedy. So that says something.

If you live in the Los Angeles area you can catch a special engagement of Walt Disney Pictures’ “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” at Hollywood’s legendary El Capitan Theatre. From October 3rd through the 16th each screening will feature a LIVE stage appearance by the film’s dog stars, “Papi” and “Chloe,” .

The film screens daily at 10:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 7:00 pm and 9:40 pm. Tickets are available at the El Capitan Theatre (6838 Hollywood Blvd.), on line at www.elcaptitantickets.com, or by calling 1-800-DISNEY6. Special group rates for parties of 20 or more are available by calling 1-818-845-3110.

The full press release is below the cut:

THE CHIHUAHUAS WILL RISE AT HOLLYWOOD’S EL CAPITAN THEATRE

FOR SPECIAL ENGAGEMENT OF DISNEY’S “BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA”

FROM OCTOBER 3-16

WITH AN ON-STAGE APPEARANCE BY FILM’S DOG STARS “PAPI” AND “CHLOE” BEFORE EACH SHOW

In celebration of its special engagement of Walt Disney Pictures’ howl-arious new comedy, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” Hollywood’s legendary El Capitan Theatre is featuring a LIVE stage appearance by the film’s dog stars, “Papi” and “Chloe,” from October 3rd through the 16th, it was announced today by Lylle Breier, senior vice president of worldwide special events for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

To commemorate the occasion, Walt Disney’s Soda Fountain and Studio Store (located adjacent to the theatre) will be offering the “Beverly Hills Chihuahua Sundae.” This mouthwatering treat comes in a delicious taco-shaped waffle cone, and is filled with vanilla ice cream, drizzled throughout with chocolate syrup, and garnished with fluffy whipped cream and festive sprinkles.

Commenting on the announcement, Breier said, “’Beverly Hills Chihuahua’ is great fun for moviegoers of all ages, and there’s no better place to see it than at the El Capitan Theatre. In addition to our beautiful state-of-the-art digital projection, friendly staff, and classic movie palace environment, this is the only place to actually see the stars of the film live and in person. We’re very excited about this special engagement and know that our audience is going to have a great time.”

Walt Disney Pictures’ “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” follows the hilarious tale of Chloe (voice of Drew Barrymore), a diamond-clad, bootie wearing pampered pooch who enjoys her luxurious lifestyle so much that she hardly notices Papi (voice of George Lopez), a neighbor dog who is head over paws in love with her. But when Chloe gets lost in Mexico with only a street-wise German Shepherd (voice of Andy Garcia) to help her find her way home, Papi heads south of the border – joining forces with a motley crew: three dogs (voiced by Placido Domingo, Luis Guzman and Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo), two humans (Piper Perabo, Manolo Cardona), a sly rat (voice of Cheech Marin), and a nervous iguana (voice of Paul Rodriguez) – to rescue his true love.

It’s been a couple days of big news on the Walt Disney Company movie front. First Johnny Depp confirmed he has at least three films for Disney in his future. First he’ll be doing voice and motion capture acting work for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland film. Depp will play the Mad Hatter, sure it’s type casting, but hey, Depp is perfect for the role, so why not. The second film announced was that Depp would play Tonto in Disney’s The Lone Ranger. Depp’s part Cherokee, in case you were wondering. Perhaps the biggest news (although we’d mentioned it much earlier on TDB) is that Depp will indeed be back for a 4th Pirates Of The Caribbean. No news on date or plot. But fountain of youth had been mentioned as a destination before.

In news from our friends at Pixar, some more details have leaked regarding the “John Carter Of Mars” project being helmed by Nemo and Wall-e director Andrew Stanton. Reportedly the film will mix live action and animation as they journey to Barsoom. Sci-Fi Wire has more.

One more voice actor has been added to Walt Disney Animation Studios hand-animatted feature film “The Princess and the Frog”. Oprah Winfrey will come on board and voice Eudora the mother of the main character Princess Tiana.

Finally, IESB.net reports that Disney’s Dick Cook, Actor Nicolas Cage, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have confirmed that the popular National Treasure movie will come back with a third edition. There’s no word on what treasure they’ll pursue this time, but expect to find out sometime in the fall of 2010.

Brad Brevet at Rope of Silicon, a movie news website, had never seen the original Tron movie before. Hard to believe I know. But it provides him a unique (non-fanboy) perspective on TR2N, aka Tron 2.0, after watching the original for the first time.

one thing the first film does do is set up the sequel with many avenues to go down. Tron was something of a man against the system story, and it opens the door to a man against man inside the system story; it’s just a matter of whether or not man will continue to die while inside the system and how much effect the Disney production factor will have on the film’s storyline.

Obviously The Matrix already ripped off a lot of what Tron brought to the table initially, but in a far more elastic way. Tron is set in a very controlled environment, but it appears there is some leeway for a rogue program inside the system, which essentially is what Neo and Morpheus were when they jacked into the Matrix.

Lots of other interesting ideas there too.

I’m really jumping ahead a bit here, But the proof of concept footage leaked from Comic-Con showed me that TR2N could easily become another Walt Disney Pictures epic trilogy along the likes of Pirates Of The Caribbean or Narnia for Disney.

The basics rules for the rich world of Tron are already established, they just need to be fleshed out to a world wide level. There are also plenty of heavy issues involved with computers and their influences on our lives that haven’t been addressed since the original TRON was released. The original Matrix touched on it, but the sequels took another direction.

With some great screenwriters I think we could be loving this new world of TRON for years to come.
