: The Nightmare Before Christmas in Digital 3-D

My family and I visited the beautiful El Capitan Theatre this past weekend for a showing of the Disney holiday classic Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas in digital 3-D.

It was a hit.

I should probably mention that both of my boys, ages 5 and 2, respectively, have seen this movie more times than I care to admit. Trust me, it’s all them.

It’s not that I don’t like the movie. I do. You could even say that I really like it. I just don’t crave it like they do. Go figure.

Needless to say our journey into the heart of Hollywood, which is spooky in its own right, was nearly on par with a trip to one of the parks. I hung it over my kids as a bribe for weeks. It was great.

The movie itself was as entertaining as ever. The 3-D? Incredible.

I’ve been to plenty of 3-D films over the years and most have been fairly cheesy. In fact, the only 3-D movies that have ever lived up to their hype (that I’ve seen) have been the shows at the Disney parks. Not that I’m biased or anything.

The Nightmare Before Christmas didn’t rely on jack-in-the-boxes or ping pong balls shooting towards the audience for cheap thrills or quick laughs. To be honest, there was actually a surprising lack of that sort of effect.

What it did do was create layers of depth that made you feel as if you were walking the streets next to Jack, wondering aloud, “what’s this?”

It’s Disney at its best, and it’s a jolly good time.

Also a good time, an Oogie Boogie sundae in the adjoining Disney Soda Fountain. This just in, marshmallow cream is messy.

For some reason (that reason is HSM3) the showings will only be late night after 10/22 running through Halloween. See it while you can, it’s a treat!

ABC’S reality show, Disney’s High School Musical: Get in the Picture, will award one prize winner the chance of a lifetime — a music video in the feature film, Disney’s “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” opening this fall and a recording contract for two singles with Walt Disney Records, one of which will be a version of the song from the music video.

During the series, finalists will hone their skills and one talented newcomer will become a part of “High School Musical” history.

Disney’s El Capitan Theatre, Hollywood

The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood is the pinnacle of the Disney movie watching experience. It is old Hollywood meets new, with restorations to both the exterior and interior, and equipped with Dolby SR-D digital sound, film and digital projectors, and 3-D capability. It is a Disney stage production. It is excellent ice cream. What’s not to love?

The El Capitan is located in the heart of Hollywood, right across the street from the Kodak Theatre- you know, the Academy Awards place. It originally opened in 1926 as “Hollywood’s First Home of Spoken Drama.” In the ten years following its opening it featured over 100 stage productions starring the likes of Will Rogers, Joan Fontaine and Clark Gable. In 1941 Citizen Kane made its World Premiere at the El Capitan Theatre. Basically, the place has history.

Then there is the ice cream. Disney’s Soda Fountain and Studio Store features an old fashioned ice cream parlor (with actual soda jerks!) serving Bakersfield’s famous Dewar’s and homemade candies. They also make a mean peanut butter and jelly sandwich (Mickey-shaped, of course).

The store portion is basically a small Disney Store with DVDs and character merchandise, but with a strong emphasis, including theming, on the film currently featured in the adjacent theatre.

We saw WALL-E (my review here, and my kids’ review here).

One of the cool things about the theatre is that they overlay everything to fit the movie, and by everything I mean from the marquee to the ATM (it was space-themed, not a robot). This is carried next door into the ice cream parlor where my son and I shared a WALL-E sundae, and by share I mean I had two bites and he went into a sugar-fueled eating frenzy (see above).

For WALL-E the El Capitan teamed with NASA and JPL. The lobby was decorated in models and information regarding various satellites, robotics, and other milestones of space exploration. It was out of this world (sorry, I couldn’t resist). WALL-E runs through August 27th.

Prior to WALL-E there was a live stage show that incorporated scenes from classic Disney/Pixar movies into dance numbers featuring the characters from the corresponding films. The show is called “Disney’s Flight of Fantasy” and the crowd went wild.

My family and I had a blast and I can’t recommend the experience enough. If you’re visiting for a Disneyland Resort vacation you should really consider adding this to your itinerary, and if you’re local you’ll appreciate this: clean bathrooms in Hollywood. That’s the Disney touch.

High School Musical Winner to get Disney Contract

The winning contestant of Disney’s “High School Musical: Get In The Picture” reality TV contest will get a small contract (2 songs) with Disney and a chance to audition to become featured talent in a future show. One of the songs will be featured as the end credits to High School Musical 3.

Sounds like another possible hit for ABC. HSM:GITP debuts July 20th on ABC. (Read)

High School Musical 4 – plans are underway!

The Hollywood Reporter quotes Disney Channel Worldwide chief Rich Ross as confirming that they are already working on the script for the fourth film in the franchise. Yep, you read that right. Rehearsals for filming have barely gotten underway on HSM3, but they’re obviously confident enough to get started on HSM4.

Based on statements of various stars (like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens) and even Mr. Ross himself it’s unlikely the full cast would reunite for the fourth film. So this would be High School Musical: The Next Generation. Which explains why they made a big deal of the ’sophomores’ hired for parts in HSM3.

What do you think? Can they come up with more songs and story lines that resonate with the next generation of students to fall for the brand?

If you missed the news, rehearsals have commenced for High School Musical: Senior Year and filming is set to begin in April on the third and final (? – Vanessa doesn’t think so) movie of The Disney Channel’s breakout hit.

A huge casting search has found three new young stars to join the cast of HSM3 as sophomore "Wildcats" – Matt Prokop, Justin Martin, and Jemma McKenzie-Brown got the call.

GossipGirls note the busy schedule that these future stars will be keeping as fame calls. Just look at Ashley Tisdale’s life.

Meanwhile Zac Efron appeared on Access Hollywood and he talks about his decision to return to the High School Musical franchise for the fans sake.

Remember HSM3 is going to skip The Disney Channel and open in regular movie theaters this time around. Opening day is October 24, 2008. News on the premiere as soon as I hear it, I promise.

Finally, someone has collected a few pictures of Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale (with her dog Maui) and Lucas Grabeel arriving for rehearsals for High School Musical 3 and put them in a video. I’ve embedded it below the cut for you.

High School Musical Stars Reunite for Third Film

It’s time to get your head in the game as Disney has announced that the cast of High School Musical has been reunited for the third film in the series. Instead of debuting on The Disney Channel, like the previous two films, this installment will go direct to theaters hoping to capitalize on the fans desire to see the characters they love experience their senior year.

Alas, there is a rumor going around that the failure of the studios to negotiate in good faith with the writer’s guide may affect production on the third film. So it’s a question if they’ll be able to meet the release date of October 24th.

That said, the star status of a few members of the cast continue to rise. In particular Zac Efron’s star appears to be climbing the highest. This month he’s featured on the cover of Details magazine with an article that dishes on some of what it’s like to be him. He seems to be really down to earth, actually. I just hope they don’t make him do one of those "Sound Of Music" songs again in the third film.

Remember how people said if you put on Pink Floyd’s ~~The Wall~~ Dark Side Of The Moon and synchronize it with The Wizard of Oz, the songs and scenes line up perfectly? Now someone has done the same trick with High School Musical 2 and The Sound Of Music. Well, at least one song of it. Zac Efron singing "Bet On It" lines up amazingly well with "The Sound Of Music".

Come on, tell you you didn’t think the same thing when you saw this scene in the movie the first time.

Btw, there is also a sync of Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.

Disney getting close to signing High School Musical cast for third film

Looks like final negotiations are winding down between the cast of High School Musical and The Walt Disney Company. Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale are rumored to be signing deals for substantial increases with the rest of the cast, including Zac Efron, following shortly. Yes, I said Vanessa Hudgens is back for High School Musical 3. See, I told you there was nothing to worry about.

Of course, now they have to worry about the writer’s strike. The distance between the two sides is wide as the Grand Canyon and doesn’t look to be drawing any closer. Might be 6 months or more before Hollywood is back to active production.

The Press Association reports on comments from Corbin Bleu that he and his fellow co-starts of the hit Disney Channel movie High School Musical are still negotiating with Disney over their appearances in the third film which will be the first theatrical release of the series.

When asked if he was holding out for more money, the actor [Corbin Bleu] joked: "Well I think that everybody’s fighting for what’s fair."

Disney had better kick the quality of the film up a notch if it’s going to the big screen. That means more money all around, which includes the actors. Of course, we’re not talking Tom Cruise money here. The actors need to be reasonable too. So we’ll see what happens. (Read)

It’s been going around again that Vanessa Hudgens is out of the theatrical release "High School Musical 3"?

Don’t you believe it. Disney isn’t cutting the throat of it’s cash cow any time soon. Hudgens would have to do something else egregious before Disney would be forced to take action.

According to the Orlando Sentinel’s TV Guy, the Disney Channel says reports of her dismissal were unfounded rumors. I don’t think they’re lying to us.

Vanessa Hudgens, star of Disney’s High School Musical films, is in the news again. This time she is being sued by a lawyer who claims she owes him money. Promised 5 percent of her profits, her lawyer is now suing for $150,000 dollars. This probably would not have even made the news had Hudgens not had that other little indiscretion. So far, Disney continues to stand by their starlet who they say have apologized.

Is Vanessa Hudgens Being Replaced?

By now you’ve probably heard about the nude photo of Vanessa Hudgens that is making its way around the internet. Yes, I’ve seen it. No, I’m not going to link to it. And no, I didn’t search for it- it was sent to me by someone that suggested it was a fake.

I would have believed that it was, but Hudgens has released a statement through her rep stating that the photo is indeed her in all her bare glory. She says that it is a personal matter.

Us Magazine is reporting that she is being removed from further High School Musical productions:

“Due to the recent scandal of “High School Musical” star Vanessa
Hudgens’ naked photo scandal, Execs at Disney have parted ways with the
star and have decided to replace her with “Cheetah Girls” star Adrienne
Bailon.

The decision came just hours after the scandal became
public and got to the offices at Disney. Says insiders, “It was an
extremely hard decision to do. Vanessa has become apart of the family,
but we felt it was irresponsible of her to do what she did.”

What did she do? At this point it is just one photo of her, standing alone, nude. Sure, it’s not the image that Disney wants to promote, but it’s a lot better than the Lohans of the world that are still supporting tragic lifestyles on Disney’s dime.

I’m guessing, although I don’t know many of you, that we have all been nude at some point in our lives. At least once.

What do you think? Is Disney doing the right thing, assuming that the source sited by Us Magazine is correct? Or do you think it is a knee-jerk reaction? Honestly, I can see a case for either side.

Update: Disney is now saying they stand by Ms. Hudgens after she apologized for having been photographed in the nude. "I want to apologize to my fans, whose support and trust
means the world to me," Hudgens said in a statement. "I am embarrassed over
this situation and regret having ever taken these photos. I am
thankful for the support of my family and friends." Well, there you have it, another fairytale Disney ending. (updated by John)

High School Musical 2 leads Disney to triumph

Let’s start with the weekly cable ratings, in order of number of viewers.

1. High School Musical 2 (Disney)
2. Hannah Montana (Disney)
3. High School Musical 2 (Disney)
4. Hannah Montana (Disney)
5. The Suite Life of Zack & Cody (Disney)
6. High School Musical 2 (Disney)
7. The Closer (TNT)
8. High School Musical (Disney)

Excepting that one TNT show, Disney ruled the roost last week. Good thing because the Network TV ratings for ABC have been abysmal this summer. Hannah Montana benefited the most from it’s position following HSM2, we’ll see if she can keep those numbers for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile the Soundtrack for HSM2 is doing its own chart climbing. In its opening week, HSM2 sold 615,000 copies for the number one spot. Even more impressive is that this was more albums than the next nine titles combined.

With numbers like that Disney is going to want to milk HSM2 a little more before starting in on another sequel. However, negotiations are supposedly underway with the stars to secure time in their schedules to reprise their roles in a third film. The New York Post’s gossip columnist reports that Zac Efron and Vannessa Hudgens are holding out for a larger slice of the pie. I hope most of the cast is like Corbin Bleu and just ride the success of the series for as long as they can.

Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times echoes Kitty-Chan’s article from yesterday on Disney’s new breed of tolerance in High School Musical 2 and the intolerant reaction from some on the right-wing side of politics. Here’s the money quote,

"As one parent and certified Disney-phile told me Monday, ‘As wholesome and family-friendly as these films are, both ‘High School Musical’ films promote tolerance, interracial dating and rejection of elitism — all ‘liberal’ themes that drive those religious right-wingers nuts.’"
