Oh, LOST! (Season 4 Finale)

There is just so much I want to yell out at the beginning of this post. (LOCKE! WALT! JIN! CLAIRE! MICHAEL!) My emotions literally ran the gamut while watching last night’s episode. There was not one wasted scene and it never ever stopped.

At the end of the last season’s finale, they shocked us with the Lostie’s future and those darned flashFORWARDs. I remember feeling like I had been to a funeral. I was wrung out! And even though we’ve had an entire season between these two finales, I feel like what we actually got last night was the Part 2 of LAST season’s finale.

We’ll do this a little differently today…this is about the 3rd time I’ve written this post. I’m trying NOT to make it as long as War & Peace. And get all the good stuff in there at the same time. So, we’ll do the micro-machine man on the basics, then get to the meat and the ALL CAPS and !!!! in a minute, ok?

Lost & Lostier (Season 4 Episode 1)

Oh, Losties. It happened! We got our first episode in 8 months! I
was just swimming in Lost last night. I’m so happy knowing I get to
drown in it each week! (Well, at least 7 more weeks. PLEASE PAY THE
WRITERS! If no one else, at least my precious Lost writers. I’ll chip
in!)

At one level so much happened last night! Usually if I get one
little tidbit or one millimeter of story advancement I feel satisfied.
Of course, this usually only happens about twice per season. So, I feel
like we got a little more information last night. But at the same time
I felt let down last night. I felt like the whole episode only took 5
minutes of actual time.

I’m not sure how to do this recap/review. Writing a Lost recap is
like writing a strange and convoluted dream that no one really
understands. Let’s just jump in shall we? Be sure, this is one BIG
spoiler. This was basically a Hurley episode, so let’s do it from his
perspective, ok?

The flashFORWARD. (I still say this word with shock. It makes me sick thinking about the Losties and their futures. More about this later…)

Jack is watching a high speed race play out through the streets of
LA on his TV. Once the police stop the car with guns raised, they watch
Hurley step out of the car. They throw him up against the wall as he
shouts the most horrifying words of the night,

“I’m one of the OCEANIC SIX!”

*chills* Oh my good lord. Who are the Oceanic Six? The only six that
got rescued? The only six that were alive? The six that got booted from
the rest of the group and were made to leave the island? ACK.

Hurley is taken to the police station where he is interrogated by
none other than Ana Lucia’s former partner. I liked this non-twist
because in every other episode, we see some random connection between
the Losties. You might not even discover it until you get on a
messageboard or read a recap. But tonight, they are bringing us out of
the weird-bubble that is The Island and give us a straight up
connection.

Well, apparently Hurley is going crazy (again). He’s seeing things
about The Island and Charlie that make him freak out. They quickly
admit him to a mental hospital.

Back to the Island.
Hurley, Sayid, Jin, Bernard, Juliet and Sawyer are on the beach
reveling in their victory over the Others and waiting for the rest of
the Losties to meet them on the beach for their rescue. In the middle
of Hurley’s victory cannonball into the ocean, Desmond paddles up. He
demands they call Jack and NOT contact the boat because per Charlie’s
warning, the boat is not Penny’s.

OF COURSE, no one wants to do what he says. Why can’t anything ever
be quick and easy? Why oh why do they have to make everything a saga?

Well, it doesn’t matter anyway, because Jack has already made the
call and the Losties are on their way to the beach. However, they are
experiencing their own problems. The boat has contacted them again.
They need Naomi to reset the coordinates (or some other technical mumbo
jumbo) but Naomi’s body (remember Locke threw a knife at her back?
*shiver*) has disappeared. There are two bloody trails. Jack, Rosseau
and Ben follow one. Kate follows the other with the phone she’s stolen
from Jack. Jack’s trail comes to a dead end with plenty of
I-told-you-so’s from Ben. Kate finds Naomi and just before she dies a
very dramatic death, she resets the phone.

Meanwhile, Hurley and the beach-losties are on a hike to meet up
with Jack and the gang. Hurley is devastated about Charlie’s death but
doesn’t even want to talk about it. Soon, he falls behind and is lost
in the jungle. He sees a ramshackle cabin in the woods. As he peers in
the window, he sees a CRAZY MAN IN A ROCKING CHAIR and then an eye
appears in the window! AAAAHHHH! When I first saw this I thought it was
Jacob in the chair and Locke’s eye. But after a little reading of the Lostpedia, it is in fact CHRISTIAN SHEPHERD in the chair! (Lostpedia said it was Jacob’s eye, but I still think it was Locke.)

Hurley thinks he’s going crazy until he sees Locke staring down at
him. They share a water (do you notice how often they do this? It’s
creepy.) They agree to talk Jack into abandoning this rescue plan.

Soon all the Losties show up at the plane’s wreckage. Jack greets
Locke with a punch to the face and then tries to shoot Locke with his
own gun. While they argue about the island and rescue (a typical
faith-vs-science conversation) Hurley interrupts. He gives a moving
speech about Charlie’s life, sacrifice and final warning then publicly
sides with Locke. Several others join him (including Sawyer & Ben!)
and they head off in the direction of the Other’s barracks. Jack, Kate
and the rest of them stare dumbfounded as the rain begins to pour. (Oh,
that rain! Every time something horrible happens, it rains!) Oh yeah,
and someone else from the boat parachutes onto the island.

Now, let’s get back to the future…

Hurley is basically visited by the ghosts of Christmas-past-present-and-future:

1. Hurley is happy in his new home, the mental facility. An attorney
from Oceanic visits to offer him a spot at an upgraded facility. When
Hurley asks for some id, the man gets really spooky and says, “ARE THEY
STILL ALIVE?”

2. While sitting outside, Charlie walks up to Hurley. Hurley knows
he’s imagining it, but he chooses to listen. Charlie tells Hurley that
"they need you". And that Hurley is the only one that can help.

3. Jack visits Hurley. Jack is spiffy, talking about how he’s still
signing autographs and loving life. Then Hurley and Jack have a
CREEEEEEEEPY conversation that basically consists of Jack asking Hurley
if he is “going to tell”. Hurley doesn’t answer. But then says
something like, “We have to go back.” Jack says, “NEVER!” and Hurley
says, “Never say never!” This is almost the exact same conversation
Jack & Kate had last season! I know this is going to be the
question of the season but, WHAT HAPPENED? WHY DO THEY WANT TO GO BACK?

My thoughts/questions/"conclusions".
1. This flashFORWARD was obviously before Jack’s flashFORWARD of last
season. This must have been pretty soon after they got back from the
island. BUT who are the OCEANIC SIX? We know Jack, Hurley, Kate and the
coffin guy. But who else? I seriously feel nauseas thinking about them
and their future.
2. The whole episode, I felt like they were trying to make us side with
Locke. That Locke/Charlie/Hurley/maybe even Ben were right and
Jack/Kate were wrong. But then Hurley says, “I’m sorry I went with
Locke.” It made me feel like Locke was actually wrong. Why? What
happens next?
3.    The attorney for Oceanic? Is he really a Dharma guy? An Other?
4. Are we going to be following TWO stories now? One on the island and
one in the future? Will these two stories meet? Will the show finale be
the Losties being rescued in the present and the Oceanic Six stepping
back on the island in the future? Or will they future change as the
events on the island play out?
5. What is UP with Christian Shepherd? Why does Jack’s dad appear
everywhere? He’s got connections with tons of the Losties, Jack
mentions him as alive in his flashFORWARD and now he’s in Jacob’s house?

My random theory:
After watching the season finale & the season premier back to back,
I have a new theory. They are in a time continuum/warp/circle/thingie.
Remember the code that was programmed by a musician? What if Charlie is
the one who programmed it? What if Hurley really got The Numbers from
the island originally? What if the Oceanic Six are trying to get back
to the island and when they do, it’s in the past? Even before they
actually crashed on the island? So, they are setting themselves up for
success (or failure) when they DO crash?

In conclusion.
I still hate Jack. I still love Locke. I am sick about everything else
in between. Oh, there’s just too much. Yippeeee! I can’t wait for next
week.

What say you, Losties? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Leave me a comment here or come chat with me over at my home, ohamanda.com!
