Fallen Princesses

A few years ago Disney Parks hired Annie Leibovitz to turn her photographers eye on Disney’s famous characters for use in an advertising campaign for the theme parks. Leibovitz took celebrities and put them in the role of those characters and a very popular campaign was born.

Take for instance this vignette of Rachel Weisz as Snow White.

Rachel Weisz by Annie Leibovitz

Here is Snow White in her most idolized scene joined with nature. But what would happen if Disney’s princesses were placed in the real world situations that would result from the conclusion of their stories? You might instead end up with something like this:

fallenprincess-snowy

‘Snowy’ is part of the ongoing Fallen Princesses project from photographer Dina Goldstein. It’s deservedly been winning awards.

Sleeping Beauty, Jasmine (as a desert warrior), and Belle (not for the squimish) are among those who get the treatment. But my favorite is this shot of Rapunzel (a feature animation movie of Rapunzel is in progress at Disney right now) in the hospital as a cancer patient. It captures perfectly what must be a very poignant moment for cancer patients who have lost their hair.

High Resolution Disney Dream Portrait Photos Moved

A housekeeping note: I am pleased that so many guests of The Disney Blog are enjoying the Annie Leibovitz “Disney Dream Portrait Series” photos. I’ve been checking my numbers and it turns out that those posts account for a large portion of my bandwidth costs and I’m not even posting the large versions of the images.

I want to use that bandwidth to provide more features for the blog’s readers, so I’ve moved all the Dream Photos to a new ‘Annex’ blog where I am now able to offer large higher resolution copies of each magical photo. These all make wonderful desktops.

If more photos are released in the series I’ll do the same. In the meantime, you can find the “Disney Dream Portrait Series” on the original posts (see below) with new links to the high-resolution images, or just visit the Dream Photo Annex.

Annie Leibovitz, Behind the scenes video and Tina Fey Close up

Thanks to the friendly folks at Digital News Agency, I’m able pass along this video with interviews and ‘making of’ footage. This is wonderful insight into how Annie Leibovitz works. For instance, I love the fact that music from the scene of the movie she’s shooting is playing in the background.

The clip includes interviews with Jennifer Lopez (J-Lo), Whoopi Goldberg, and Gisele Bundchen.

Also I’ve heard that some folks want to see Tina Fey as Tinker Bell a bit clearer than in the previous pictures. So here’s a crop and zoom in on Tina as Tink. That’s a pretty funny face she’s making.

Annie Leibovitz returns with more photos for Disney

Update: Four more photos added to series 1/24/08. One more added 4/25/08.

Roger Federer by Annie LeibovitzAnnie Leibovitz returns with more photos from her Disney Dream Portrait Series. Tennis ace Roger Federer, who has been the #1 ranked men’s tennis player in the world for four consecutive years, portrays King Arthur and pulls a sword from the anvil that holds a magical grip upon it. The gallant scene is reminiscent of Disney’s animated film ‘The Sword in the Stone,’ in which a young King Arthur follows the wizardly teachings of Merlin.

Rachel Weisz by Annie LeibovitzThe regal image is one of three unveiled today to celebrate Disney Parks’ ‘Year of a Million Dreams.’ Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida commissioned Leibovitz to create images featuring international celebrities in fairy tale settings. Two more Leibovitz images that Disney Parks released today feature actress Rachel Weisz as ‘Snow White,’ and actress Julie Andrews portraying the Blue Fairy from Disney’s ‘Pinocchio’ with her ‘apprentice’ fairy, portrayed by starlet Abigail Breslin.

julie andrews by Annie LeibovitzThe first three images that Leibovitz created for Disney Parks were released in January 2007. Those images featured actress Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella, singer/actress Beyonce as ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ and international soccer star David Beckham portraying Prince Phillip from Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty.’

Update: Find High-Resolution versions of all “Disney Dream Portrait Series” on The Disney Blog Dream Photo Annex.

Saving money on an upscale Disney visit?

Rick Munarriz of the Motley Fool has another column of excellent analysis of the Walt Disney Company. The same week Disney released the upscale promotional pictures of Annie Leibovitz, they also rolled out a new website disneyworld.com/affordable where families can price out value-oriented vacation options at the Walt Disney World Resort. The estimated cost of that vacation went up $100 to $1600, but that’s still a steal for the access you’re afforded to Disney’s magical kingdoms.

Is $1,600 really that cheap? That was a
question that heated up our Disney discussion board earlier this month.
Naturally there are plenty of families that just can’t swing that, and
even fewer when you tack on the travel costs to get to Central Florida
as well as the busy registers ringing up marked up meals and souvenirs.

That
isn’t the point, though. If $1,600 is too steep, there isn’t a lot that
Disney can do for you beyond pitching you shorter vacations or
encouraging you to stay at a cheaper hotel off Disney property.

True enough. A lot of times though, it’s a $5-20 a day difference to upgrade to the Walt Disney World property. Waiting a little bit longer or collecting some more refundable cans might make the difference.

I have to say I looked at the new website and wasn’t that impressed. First off, there is a sound issue. It plays sounds and music and there is no mute option. Second, there were not a lot of details provided for the various packages they suggested. It’s the days of Web 2.0. It should be easy to drill down and get whatever information you need. You should also be able to subscribe to price changes or alerts for special opportunities. Didn’t see either of those options anywhere.

What do you think? Is it worth it to stay on property?
