We’re just a few short weeks away from the premiere of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first Star Wars feature film that is not a part of the Star Wars saga series. But it is related to the Saga stories in a key way, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will follow the group of rebels who set out to steal the plans for the Death Star and put an end to the Empire. The same plans that we see at the beginning of Star Wars: A New Hope being placed into R2D2 by Princess Leia.
Yesterday Lucasfilm released a new poster for Rogue One, which is usually a sign that a new trailer is coming the next day. Indeed, this morning the following trailer debuted on Good Morning America:
Okay. That was pretty fantastic. I like that we’re seeing a bit of Darth Vader. We also see more of Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) which is the film’s other main villain. There’s definitely a connection between Jyn Erso and Krennic. Erso’s father was taken by the Empire to help build the Death Star, something she witnessed as a young child.
We see and older Erso being rescued from an Imperial holding cell and brought to Rebel headquarters and recruited Diego Luna to help steal the plans for the Death Star. Then we’re in the middle of the operation as Erso and Luna recruit fighters and set off on their mission.
We hear them giving a ‘call sign’ of Rogue One, hence the film’s title.
The rebels are correct to be afraid of an Empire with an operational Death Star. In fact, the Empire is pretty powerful already, but the rebels have hope as Erso says. Rebellions are built on hope.
I am happy to see the trailer has all the stuff we’ve come to expect from a Star Wars film. Exotic locations, underdogs fighting against a superior power, the dark side versus the light. I’m incredibly excited. How about you?
Up next we should learn when movie tickets for Rogue One will go on sale. What format are you planning to see the movie in? It will be available in pretty much all of them from regular digital HD to IMAX 3D.
