“Zootopia” claws way to top of Box Office with $70 million debut

The movie box office is often a wild jungle, but it has a new king this weekend; Disney’s “Zootopia” has roared its way to the top of the food chain with an estimated $70 million take (now $73.7 million according to updated reports).

If estimates hold, “Zootopia” will set the record for the largest non-Pixar Disney animated debut weekend. Previously that was held by “Frozen” with a $67.4 million launch. “Frozen” had the advantage of a Thanksgiving weekend opening too. The largest ever animated film from any studio opening in March was Illumination’s “The Lorax” which seems in reach. However, the $121 million all-time animated opening by “Shrek the Third” is not in reach.

With the over $100 million “Zootopia” has already earned overseas, this puts the film on the path to being a big hit for the Mouse House. We loved the film, which you can read in our review, and hope you all go out to see it in theaters.
