Leave it to Captain Jack Sparrow himself to make not one, but two surprise appearances at D23 Expo.

First, on Friday, Johnny Depp made a surprise showing at the Disney Legends Awards where he was given the award and later added his handprints to the Legends Wall at the Disney Studios. Depp received significant applause the the audience.

A day after the Disney Legends awards, there was a second surprise visit by Johnny Depp. During the “Live Action” presentation, Depp showed up on stage completely decked out as Captain Jack Sparrow, brought down the house, and thrilled fans at the presentation of the next exciting film in the “Pirates of the Caribbean “ franchise, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

Here’s a recap of both times Johnny Depp was up on stage at D23 Expo:

From what we know of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” it follows a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow who finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

The film is directed by Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning and stars Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kevin R. McNally, Kaya Scodelario, Golshifteh Farahani, Stephen Graham, David Wenham and Geoffrey Rush. We also learned that Orlando Bloom would reprise his role as Will Turner.

There’s still a long wait until we see Captain Jack Sparrow on the big screen again. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” releases in U.S. theaters on July 7, 2017.

After Depp’s time on stage, he bumped into another big named star in Disney’s growing constellation:

This photo captured the perhaps the biggest backstage moment of the expo, where else could Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) meet Harrison Ford (Han Solo/Indiana Jones) but at D23 Expo? I wonder what they talked about? Perhaps a cameo role in each other’s big franchises? As far as I can tell with my IMDB sleuthing, they’ve never acted together in a film. Hopefully, Disney is looking to fix that in the near future. Of course, no studio could afford to pay both Ford and Depp to star in the same film and expect to make a profit so that probably explains why it’s never happened before. Maybe something will pop up.

Are you looking forward to another Pirates of the Caribbean film staring Johnny Depp? What do you think of his surprise appearance at the D23 Expo?
