Disney On Broadway: Your Hopes & Dreams?

DisneyOnBroadway

Here is another series I am going to try out here, all about what YOU want to see. The articles will short, but I am hoping the comments is where real conversation can be had on various topics.

As many may know, I am a huge Broadway fan, so every time word gets out that Disney Theatricals is working on a new project, I become immediately excited. Recently, they have announced stage adaptations of The Princess Bride, Father of the Bride, Dumbo and The Hunchback of Notre Dame in the works for either Broadway or the West End. The much beloved Aladdin will be premiering on the Great White Way this Spring, bringing Disney’s total currently on Broadway back to three.

With the success of Frozen, however, many have speculated that this is bound to hit NYC within a few years. Many people say “How can you bring those huge ice and snow landscapes on stage,” but similar questions were asked when they decided to bring The Lion King to Broadway. Heck, Beauty and the Beast made the leap from screen to stage in 3 years.

So, here are the questions I’d like you to answer in the comments:

  1. Is Frozen a good choice for a Broadway show?
  2. Is there a failed Disney Theatricals show that you would like to see come back? (Tarzan, On The Record, etc.)
  3. Of the 4 mentioned that are being worked on, which is your most anticipated?
  4. What Disney film would you love to see brought to the stage?

Let me know your answers in the comments so we can get the conversation started! I will leave you with the Broadway and Beyond concert from this past year’s D23 Expo which was fantastic. Until next time…Have a Magical Day!

Frozen screams Broadway to me. I left the movie invisioning possible set, costume designs staging and choreography.
There are so many special effects that could be done on stage to bring it to life.

  2. Erik says:

    Great questions!! Love Broadway Disney!

    1. I have no doubt that Frozen WILL make a great stage show someday.

    2. I missed Tarzan and On the Record, and Little Mermaid which I would consider their other non-success. Love to see them all. Tarzan would be top pick.

    3. Can not wait for Hunchback!! Been waiting so long. And have high hopes that Dumbo will be amazing. Who knows what they will do with it. So many directions they could go. I love the “Song of the Roustabouts”. I’d love to see it staying on that darker side and getting to see stories of the side characters of the circus who are also considered outcasts like Dumbo, like the clowns, vendors, and the crows. Worried about Princess Bride. One of my all-time favorite movies. Worried how they can possibly do it justice, but will run to it if it gets good reviews. Don’t care anything about Father of the Bride.

    4. Top picks would be Pocahontas and Hercules (now that Hunchback is official)!! Also love to see Princess and the Frog. Both it and Tangled I think have great potential. That sums up my top picks. For some out-there options: Pete’s Dragon, Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Swiss Family Robinson???

    • Marshal Knight says:

Amen to the Hercules choice, but that Swiss Family Robinson idea could be amazing! Can you imagine a 3-story treehouse set?! Wow!

  3. pam says:

no to Frozen but YES to Hunchback!!!

  4. H says:

Tarzan was amazing. My family loved it.

  5. Hannah says:

I think Frozen was MADE to be a musical. It would translate so well, I’ve been designing the stage set in my mind since it premiered. I’m a dork but I’ve always wanted to see 101 Dalmations, I have been anticipating the Hunchback of Notre Dame since I saw the stage version at MGM studios way back in the 90′s, and other than Frozen I would absolutely love to see Winnie the Pooh, Pinocchio, Emperors New Groove, or something following a Buzz Lightyears Space Rangers plotline.

  6. Kris says:

I’ve read a couple people’s ideas of how Frozen would be translated to stage, and it sounds like it would be great! That said, I think Mulan would be an interesting choice. That and Hunchback sounds amazing!

  7. Christopher T. Rhodes says:

With the number of Broadway stars in Frozen, not to mention the fact that the songwriters have a Broadway background, the movie was practically bred for a stage adaption — and I wouldn’t put it past the Walt Disney Company to have done that intentionally.

I would love to see a Disney version of Peter Pan on stage! The story was originally a play, turned book, turned Disney movie, then turned Broadway musical so the groundwork is already there in spades. What would be really interesting would be to incorporate some of the musical’s songs into the Disney version of the story.

  8. Mackenzie says:

    1. YES! YES! YES! YES! All the songs! Finding Nemo is a play. Lion King is a Broadway play. Frozen can do it!

    2. Tarzan sounds cool!

    3. Hunchback all the way. I love that movie. I need to see that play!

    4. Tangled, Mulan, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Pocahontas.
