Limited Time Magic

I wasn’t going to post this video because the Sound Quality is a bit poor. But with the path Limited Time Magic is taking, I think it’s time to share. The interview is with Scott Cassidy, Senior Vice President, Global Alliance Marketing at Disney Parks & Resorts. The interview covers the larger marketing efforts surrounding the idea of Limited Time Magic, and then delves into some of the details of the in-park promotion.

Of note, Cassidy says while all 52 weeks are planned out, there are opportunities to repeat popular weeks. So if you like something let them know while you’re in the park. You may see it return later in the year.

I think it’s possible that us fans are obsessing about the Limited Time Magic events a bit more than Disney expected us too. In my case it’s likely because I’ve often wished Disney would do something just like this in their parks. Space Mountain with the lights on, vintage costumes, bringing back old shows and more. When I heard about this promotion, the expectations were already there. How was Disney to know it would be tough to live up to them?

    I am one who is not impressed. Some of these concepts would be nice on a regular basis rather than creating a year long marketing event around it.

    Wow, u need to throw up a warning. I watch these videos with my kids because they like seeing what Disney is doing. He starlight out says Santa is not real in this video. This makes me very upset because I’m having to try to figure out how to explain this to my kids now. You really need to put up warning because I am sure others will have this happen too.

    When you create excitement starting weeks beforehand with ice castles and such, people develop fairly grand expectations. I think there’s a huge disconnect between the measures they’ve put in place that require tons and tons of planning (with more of these coming soon, MyMagic+) and events that are announced three days before they begin. I’m sure that the promotion was intended to be a pleasant surprise that coincided with already-in-progress trips, but the planning culture they’re creating isn’t conducive.

    The huge build-up and amount of marketing being placed with this theme are not correlated to the events so far. Something along the lines of having top name entertainment like Disneyland used to have would be in this vein. Also having a few weeks of the Bi-Centennial or original Main Street Electical parade. Bring back the Indian Village, etc. wouldbe in like with the magnitude of the expectations you have created.

    These weekly events aren’t supposed to be items you plan a trip to go see, but rather a little added extra to your trip if you’re already there. They all can’t be a home run, everyone must run and see immediately event.

    The only must do on a WDW vacation should be to have fun, and these so far seem to be a good way to spend a unique hour or two.
