John Carter – Official Trailer

Hello! And before you know it, the official trailer for Disney’s John Carter (of Mars) is out.

This looks so good. Delicious even. What do you think?

Plot synopsis is below the jump:

Plot Synopsis: John Carter of Mars is inexplicably transported to the mysterious and exotic planet Mars, and becomes embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions and discovers that the survival of the planet and its people rests in his hands.

John Carter is a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). John Carter is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

    It looks gorgeous.

But please, please, please tell me it’s not yet another movie about the Heroic White Man Who Saves the Natives. We’ve had enough of that with Dances with Wolves and Dances with Aliens.

Fantastic! Looking forward to this film version by Disney. I first read the Burrough’s Martian (Barsoomian) series in 1977-78 while a deployed Marine in the Mediterranean Sea as part of U. S. Naval task force. The books were a great distraction and fun read.

For you comic book fans, Marvel comics did a series of issues entitled John Carter, Warlord of Mars. (I found back issues at ComicCon-San Diego 3 years ago.) Who knows, maybe the movie will spur a re-issuance of the comics. There were even some action figures of John Carter and Tars Tarkas that were sold in the mid-90′s. (Have a few of those as well.) I guess I’m a John Carter geek.
