The One-Sheet and release date for Disney’s John Carter was released today. Odd that the initials on the poster are clearly J C M as in John Carter of Mars, the name of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel this film is based on. Not sure why they changed the title myself.
“John Carter” will hit theaters on March 9th, 2012. It is directed by Pixar’s Oscar winning director Andrew Stanton, but is live action. Stars include: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church, and Willem Dafoe. That’s some pretty hefty acting talent.
They’ve also released the synopsis:
From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.
I give Disney props for taking on this book. A seminal work of science fiction/fantasy, its legions of fans are sure to turn out, but they’ll also be very critical of anything that strays too far from the source materials. What about you? Are you looking forward to “John Carter” or is there a collective “Huh?” going on in your head right now?
I wonder if Disney dropped the “Mars” in the title so as not to remind the audience of “Mars Needs Moms”?

I’ve been a John Carter / Edgar Rice Burroughs nut since I was 11 years old, and the only ERB material I’ve had to subsist on has been the various Tarzan films and those crummy Pellucidar and Caspak films that Doug McClure made in the 1980’s (we won’t speak of the Mars film made by Traci Lords a couple of years ago). I for one am as excited as all hell that Andrew Stanton has managed to get this film made. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t drop the ball, because the Mars series has some of Burroughs most imaginative material, and would look spectacular on the big screen.
I hope they do this right. The material can be a bit risqué. Dejah Thoris’s outfits in the comics and novels aren’t Disney material. Check out the Dynamite Entertainment John Carter comics for a reference.
