Disney Expanding Cars Franchise to Planes

With Cars 2 coming next from Pixar Studios, the common thought was that Disney would then spin off a Cars animated TV series to continue the franchise. Today, however, Movieline is claiming that Pixar will instead work on a Direct to DVD movie set in the world of Cars, but focused on Planes.

Cars wasn’t the biggest box office hit, but it’s merchandise sales have been astronomic. So Disney is hoping that while little Johnny may not buy another Cars toy, they’ll be happy to buy something that flies. What do you think?

Definitely a cash grab. If they keep up with the Quality route then I’m okay with it.

I thought that they were finished with the direct to DVD movies and weren’t doing any more of those.

My son is 4, and Cars is one of the few Disney movies in recent years to be targeted to young boys. As my son says “I don’t like princesses”. Cars with planes, fine. Just give us an alternative to princesses!
