Pixar buys first ever ‘promoted’ Trending Topic on Twitter

Here’s an interesting footnote for Disney history, the first ever promoted Trending Topic on the popular Twitter.com microblogging service was advertising Pixar’s much anticipated Toy Story 3 film.

If you log onto the web service and look in the right hand column you’ll see that ‘Toy Story 3′ appears in the ‘trending topics’ list with a button that says ‘sponsored’ next to it.

If you click on that line you’re taken to a search for ‘Toy Story 3′ with, of course, a tweet from the @DisneyPixar account right at the top. It also states that this was ‘promoted by Disney*Pixar’.

It’s great to see Disney experimenting with social media for marketing its movies. If you follow the search you can see that there was already a lot of buzz on twitter about Toy Story 3, so it makes perfect sense to advertise there. No word on that a campaign like this costs.
