Wizarding World of Harry Potter Details Revealed

Today’s the big day for Harry Potter fans who are looking forward to actually visiting Hogwarts School of Magic or walking through the village of  Hogsmeade. Universal Orlando is rolling out more details of what you can expect in a special video conference. Unfortunately it’s invite only.

As it turns out, the attraction names I had back in July were correct. The main attraction that will feature robocoaster technology and will inhabit the interior of Hogwarts will be called “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.” Universal claims it will be unlike anything ever ridden before and will feature popular scenes from the books and movies. It also sounds like Forbidden Journey will have a very detailed queue that winds through some of the castle’s well known rooms.

Two existing attractions will be renamed. The kid friendly Flying Unicorn will become “”Flight of the Hippogriff” and Dueling Dragons will become “Dragon Challenge”. I hope they work hard to keep all the great details of the Dueling Dragons queue. It’s one of the best outside Disney. Dragon Challenge is based on the Tri-wizarding Tournament, which features dragons, so that makes sense. Flight of the Hippogriff will feature a ‘Care of Magical Creatures Class.’

There will be three dining locations: Three Broomsticks, Magic Neep, and Butterbeer. Stores and retail locations include: Zonko’s, Owl Post, Ollivanders, Honeydukes, and Dervish and Banges. A new shop, located inside Hogwarts, will be called “Fitch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods.” There you can buy remote-controlled golden snitches among other fun items.

The Owlery and Owl Post will be working Post Office where visitors can get a Hogsmeade postage cancellation. Won’t all your friends at home be jealous?

Right now the ‘Grand Opening’ for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is planed for Spring 2010, which meets their June 2010 contractual date, but probably won’t include all the attractions.

Update: Here’s a video fly-through of the new land. I’ve added some annotations to help make connections

  2. Thanks for all the info!!! Overall it looks pretty cool — though would have been great to see at least one more new attraction instead of a bunch of shops/restaurants and re-themes of existing rides. Still, the e-ticket (for Uni) sounds like it’s going to be amazing and I can’t wait to check it out!!!

Bums me out to see Universal doing all the innovative stuff these days (Spidey, Harry Potter, Transformers, etc.) while Disney hasn’t truly done anything groundbreaking since Indy back in the mid 90s. Aside from some great work with animatronics, the best they’ve done since then really is rollercoaster that goes backwards and another simulator ride. A great simulator ride sure, but certainly not leaps and bounds beyond Star Tours.

And as great as the Fantasyland addition looks, again, there’s nothing really pushing the technology any further. Uncle Walt would be so sad to see the lack of, well… Progress.

  3. I certainly hope that isn’t all that they plan to offer. Is there going to be a phase 2? This just seems like mostly shopping and a new coat of paint on existing stuff (with the exception of one new ride). I guess given Rowling’s nitpickiness, I expected something a bit more. Ah well.

  4. I had no interest in this prior to this post. So sad that Disney didn’t get to scoop this.
Never set food inside the Universal property before. This might actually warrant a visit. Dunno.

  5. Imagine — IOA is worth the price of admission alone to take a ride on Spider-Man. In the 10 years since that ride came out I have yet to see anything that comes close to topping what they did with that one. From the elaborate queue to the actual ride, it’s one of the most immersive and thrilling experiences you’ll find at any theme park.

When the park opened back in ’99, IOA really gave Disney a run for their money, but sadly they have not done much expansion at all in the last decade which has made it become a bit stale. They also don’t maintain it as well as Disney maintains their park unfortunately. And as great as IOA is/was, it always lacked that “magic” that (most of) the Disney parks have. It’s neighbor, Universal Florida is also a beautiful park for what it’s worth.

  6. I never really felt the draw to universal, always staying on site in disney and then pritty much staying put. This harry potter world is tempting me out of my wdw room. A shame disney couldnt get it, but not sure it would have fitted in anyway. Looking forward to the new disney fantasy land!
