Return of Animation to Florida?

Back when the Walt Disney Company built Disney-MGM Studios as its third theme park in Central Florida the feeling was that Hollywood East was becoming a reality. Alas, the last 20 years have not been kind to the concept. Nearly every major studio effort has been ended. However, there are still a few wonderful independent studios (animation and film) that exist in the state. Plus there is a strong gaming company presence.

A new Digital FX house has just been announced by the company that owns Digital Domain. To be located in Port St. Lucie, Fla. , the new digital effects house could be the start of a return to Hollywood East or it could just be owner Dan Marino (Former QB of the Miami Dolphins) just looking to move some of his holdings to his home state.

I would like nothing more than to see a stronger film and TV industry for the state. In theory we might even see Disney or Pixar re-open it’s Orlando animation branch again. Of course, I’m probably just dreaming.

  1. I was very disappointed when it was announced that Pixar would be opening studios in Canada when they could have opened here. I miss the Studios being a working studio.

  2. I wish studios would actually follow through with this. It seems like a logical thing to do. It would also probably be financial beneficial to have a “post” on the East coast.
