It’s easy to vacation green.

Here are 5 simple ways

Keep your cool
Shut the doors when the A/C is running.

Take time to unplug.
Turn off or unplug lights, appliances, and chargers when not in use.

Set your limits.
Set A/C to 76 degrees or warmer in summer, or heat to 68 degrees or cooler in winter.

Catch a ride.
Take the bus or carpool when possible.

Pitch in.
Use provided recycle bins if available.

These seem like fairly simple steps, but when put in practice on your vacation, they can make a big difference.

Please add your suggestions for greening your Disney vacation in the comments below.

  1. A big way to keep your vacation green is to take along a Seafood Watch Guide – these are pocket-sized guides published by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and they’re quite wonderful. Disney serves plenty of non-sustainable seafood, unfortunately, so the way to make a difference is to pay attention to what you’re buying. If you like seafood, you can easily find sustainable substitutes for your favorite fish.

The Seafood Watch guides make it very easy; they’re downloadable, they’re updated yearly, and they even publish regional guides. They also just came out with a sushi-specific guide!

Of course, Disney ought to be more aggressive about this issue and rework their menus to reflect sustainable choices… but in the meantime, we as consumers can make our own choices.
