Disney News & Links: I wonder what happened to Rosita

  • Illustrator, Designer, and Imagineer Dorothea Redmond died last week. She had quite a career, even before Walt tapped her for WED. Her work on the Disney family apartment in New Orleans Square was recently brought to life in the Dream Suite, although Walt never got to personally experience it. There is a very nice profile in the LA Times. It’s good to see Walt’s team getting the recognition they deserve.
  • Ken Pellman returns to LaughingPlace.com with another Kenversations. This one explores the most likely scenarios for the sale of the Busch Entertainment Parks (SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, etc). Is that a Hidden Mickey on Shamu?
  • It looks like Formula One won’t be coming to Disneyland Paris Resort after all. That said, I still think it’s possible for Walt Disney World to set up a temporary road course near its current race track and attract F1 to Orlando.
  • File this under – I knew I should have kept sending those postcards in. A 47-year membership in the DVC was won via mail in submission as part of the Year of a Million Dreams promotion. Thankfully the couple are huge Disney fans, so it won’t go to waste.
  • BusinessWeek has a longer look at why Hong Kong Disneyland might be in trouble. Numbers are down and the HK Government isn’t playing ball with Disney. Another example of why building small might not be the best strategy for new Disney Parks.
  • Last night I was very sad to hear that one of the female African elephants at Disney’s Animal Kingdom died after a months long battle with disease. Tumpe came to DAK in 2007 and while providing treatment she was kept separate from the rest of the herd, so hopefully they’re safe.

  1. Disney would be wise not to get involved with F1. It would be a sure money loser for the Mouse in Orlando. The fees for hosting a race are outrageous, and the only way F1 race tracks survive is with large government subsidies. Bernie E. has never met a race promoter he would not like to gouge for a few $$million more.

  2. I know that’s what everyone says about F1 races, and yet countries and companies fight to host them all the time. Disney World could use the international exposure right now. That’s something that would make an investment in a track and facilities worth doing.
