Rumor: Glen Keane removed from Rapunzel by Lasseter

CartoonBrew just posted a crazy rumor from inside Walt Disney Animation Studios. A CalArts professor claims that John Lasseter has removed Glen Keane from the director’s chair on Rapunzel. Apparently too many problems were cropping up with the work so far.

Lasseter had previous assigned a new writer to help Keane, so it’s not a stretch to think that additional action would be taken if progress wasn’t being made. Keane has worked for 7 years on this project, so the removal, if true, would doubtlessly be very hard for Keane to take.

Update: Floyd Norman has verified the rumor. However, Keane might have stepped down for personal reasons.

  2. I feel so bad for Glen. I admire his work so much as the leader in his generation of animators. This seemed like a climax for him after so many successes in animation. And I was excited to see what he would do with his own project. I have been worried that it is taking so long. That’s not usually a good sign. Hopefully we’ll have a wonderful movie come out of it in the end. I certainly am trusting John Laseter’s decisions these days. But most of all, I just hope Glen is healthy and in good spirits- he’s an amazing animator.
