Salute to the Adventurers Club

You may not have noticed, but last night was the final call for the Adventurers Club, not to mention all the remaining clubs of Pleasure Island. I don’t have much to say on the matter other than I understand Disney’s motivation here, but still regret the loss of the Adventurers Club.

If you don’t read anything else read this tribute by one of the opening year cast members, who then worked the show for another 17 years, Kris Truelsen.

Tonight marks the end of Pleasure Island. The night club complex that opened in 1989 at Walt Disney World was why I moved from California to Florida, having been offered a one-year contract to perform at the Adventurers Club. I stayed seventeen years. I could write a book about the place, my time there, my dear friends, my thoughts and feelings, and my warm memories and bitter resentments. It would all spill over from the Adventurers Club to the other night clubs (especially the Comedy Warehouse) to Pleasure Island to Downtown Disney to Walt Disney World to Orlando to Florida to The Disney Company and to the United States of America.

A big thank you to Kris and all the other cast members who helped make Pleasure Island so magical.

We were at Disney last week and found out by reading an article of the closing of the clubs at Pleasure Island. I have to be honest, one of the reasons we go to Disney is the Comedy Club. We love it! We heard so many different stories about why it was closing, I would love to know the real reason. Not for lack of interest, because it was usually packed every performance. We heard Disney wanted to make it more family friendly. What about the adults they want to attract? We heard there were fights in the clubs and they did not want to deal with that. Sorry but that is going to happen anywhere! They need to just deal with it.
What will happen to all the great performers at both clubs? I am really upset at this news and am rethinking our DVC membership. Disney is making a mistake, a big one.

I am happy to see someone else as displeased as I am at the closure of the clubs at Pleasure Island.
I particularly miss the Adventurers’ Club, as there is nothing else like it anywhere. This was always a highlight of our trips to Disney world, and we we would go to the Adventurers’ club 2 or 3 times during a week at the Disney parks.

I don’t think the decision makers know what a unique and entertaining venue thay had.

I just returned from Disney World 12/4/2008 and I am disappointed beyond belief to hear they are closing the best atraction for adults – I sat on the steps of the Adventurer’s Club for 1-hour in shock and am still very dissipointed today. As a DVC owner and a large Disney stock holder all I can say is the person responsible should be FIRED!! This was a Huge mistake Disney’s part – HUGE
The Adventurers Club has a large following and it was the place parents could escape to enjoy Adult time. Disney does not have to be 100% about the kids – they cold have at least saved this special place. With the switch to RCI in the DVC from ii – I feel Disney is on a down hill slide. As an RCI member the resorts are crap – I joined DVC for the QUALITY of Disney – SAD very SAD
