Back in 1908 Emile Cohl created Fantasmagorie. It debuted on August 17th, 100 years ago today.
It may look like animated chalk drawings, but it’s actually black lines drawn on white paper and then printing in negative to make it look like chalk drawings. The whole picture used 700 drawings.

Gotta call shenanigans on this one. While you could make the argument that Fantasmagorie is the first ‘fully animated’ film, the honor of first film animator should go to J. Stuart Blackton, for ‘Humorous Phases of Funny Faces”…here’s the wiki link:
