Elton John’s Gnomeo & Juliet not killed afterall

  • by

Rumors of the projects death have been greatly exaggerated. Sir Elton John’s Gnomeo and Juliet project had been rumored to receive the axe at Walt Disney Feature Animation, in fact it was only transferred to Disney’s Miramax division. Perhaps the goal is to compete the the edgier animation pieces that ex-Miramax chiefs, the Weinstein Brothers, have been releasing.

  1. I’m not sure an Elton John musical about lawn gnomes counts as “edgy.” Unless the definition of edgy means something different now than it used to.

Remember when Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Nightmare Before Christmas were the movies Disney tried to distance itself from by using the Touchstone name? I’m pretty sure this one won’t turn out that way.

I’ve been dreading this thing since I heard about it years ago, but this way everyone wins. If a movie about lawn gnomes actually sounds like a good idea to you, you will still get to see it. But at the same time the Disney name won’t have to be further tainted by it.
