Hurricane Wilma and Walt Disney World

As of tonight’s 11PM EST forecast from the National Hurricane Center, Orlando is still in the "cone of uncertainty" for Hurricane Wilma. That means visitors expecting to attend one of Walt Disney World’s theme parks or other attractions in the central and southern Florida regions should be prepared to meet with some delays or closures this Saturday and Sunday going into Monday.

Everybody is old hands at hurricane preparation at the theme parks having gone through this routine four times last year. Most hotels in the Orlando area survived with nothing more that a little wind and rain damage and most attractions opened within 24 hours or so of the storms passing. So there really is no reason to be concerned or postpone your stay. That said, keep your eyes on the weather channel and the NHC website and you might want to bring some extra rain gear as even if Wilma passes south of Orlando, we’ll still likely see tropical storm strength wind gusts and rains.

  3. Aghhh! My mum (mature lady), my daughter and I are fying from Malaga in Sapin, to Newark and then to Orlando tomorrow (Saturday) amd due to land at about 17:30pm. Any advice on the following few days eg delays at airports, if the parks are open, the best ones to go to in the storms (I was thinking MGM – a lot indoors). Can you buy ‘wet gear’ at the Polynesian – don’t really want to take it. Do you think we’ll get stuck at Newark? etc. etc. Any advice greatly received!!!

  4. Wilma has slowed down significantly. I don’t think they’ll have any problems travelling on Saturday. Although Orlando remains in the ‘cone of uncertainty’, Wilma’s current track takes it well south of Orlando. The parks should get lots of rain, a chance of tornados, and some strong wind gusts. But nothing like they’ll see in South Florida. Rain Gear, Ponchos, can be bought at the Poly store or in any of the parks. As for what park is best in the rain? I would say MGM is a good choice, EPCOT is good too with lots of big pavillions to explore while it rains. Do take care if there is lightning in the area and listen to all warnings from cast members about severe storm weather.

I’m sure you’ll have a good time even if there is lots of rain. A fun activity is to spend some time exploring the various hotels. Animal Kingdom Lodge is a favorite of mine with BOMA being an excellent restaurant. Don’t forget Downtown Disney too. As a silver lining, you might experience lighter crowds at the parks as some people cancel their trips. Last year Guests staying at the Disney resorts got one ‘free’ day where the park was open only to them. None of the big parks stayed closed for more than 24 hours after the storm passed.

  5. I WAS IN DISNEYWORLD YEARS AGO AFTER HUGO WENT THROUGH AND I AGREE THEY ARE VERY PREPARED FOR ANY STORMS AND GET THE RIDES BACK ON ASAP, WE WILL BE IN FLORIDA THURSDAY AND IF THE STORM MISSES IT COULD BE A GOOD THING AS THE WAIT TIMES SHOULD BE LOW DUE TO SOME PEOPLE CANCELLING THERE TRIP.

  7. Kristy. As I posted today it looks like the rain and wind will be gone by this afternoon leaving behind slighlty cooler and much nicer weather. So you should be fine.
